To‑Dos
Bring together the actions in your Memories and record what you've dealt with.
See what still needs doing
A Memory can hold something you want to do alongside the context that explains it. You might save meeting notes that include “Send Mira the revised outline” or a message to yourself about booking an appointment.
To‑Dos brings those actions together. It helps you see what still needs doing and record what you've completed, closed without completion, or set aside. The original words stay in your collection; completing a to‑do doesn't rewrite its Thought or change its Memory or Currents.
Turn To‑Dos on in Preferences
Open Preferences and turn on To‑Dos. To‑Dos then appears under Library.
If your To‑Dos setting can't be loaded, choose Reload to try again.
Memory Currents gathers to‑dos already identified in your Memories and adds new ones as they are identified. It doesn't start completed, canceled, or archived items over when you turn it on again.
A Memory can contain a to‑do before its individual Thoughts have been identified. Those Memories may appear under Possible To‑Dos rather than in the to‑do list.
Find the items you want
The status filter starts at Open. Change it to see completed, archived, or canceled items. The page keeps your status, Current, and search choices while this browser tab stays open.
Choose a Current to narrow the page to that part of your collection. Search uses the Thoughts' words in the to‑do list and the Memories' words in Possible To‑Dos. Current and search apply to both lists; status applies only to the to‑do list. Use the page controls to move through your to‑dos. Possible To‑Dos shows the oldest matches first; when there are more, it says how many, and searching finds a newer one.
Record what happened
On an Open to‑do, you have three choices:
- Complete records that you did it. Choose the circle on the item to begin.
- Archive sets it aside without recording completion.
- Cancel closes it without recording completion.
Each choice opens an optional reason field and a button named for the choice: Complete, Archive, or Cancel. Add a reason if it helps you remember your decision, then choose that button. You can also leave the reason empty; the item then shows a plain explanation such as “Manually completed.”
Press Esc or choose the same action again to close the reason field without changing the item.
Completed, archived, and canceled items remain readable but are read-only. There is no restore or start-again control. If one Memory contains several to‑dos, completing one doesn't complete the others.
When you archive a Memory
A to-do appears here while at least one active Memory holds its Thought. Archiving one Memory doesn't hide the to-do if another holding Memory is still active. Archiving the last active Memory hides it from every status view.
Unarchiving any Memory holding that Thought makes the to-do visible again with its previous status, reason, and history. Completed to-dos stay completed, and separately archived to-dos remain archived. Unarchiving a Memory doesn't restart a to-do or provide a way to restore a separately archived to-do.
This also applies to original Memories archived after splitting. An active smaller Memory can keep the shared Thought's to-do visible. Thoughts in archived Memories remain readable even when their to-dos are hidden.
Current filters and labels reflect active Memories in active Currents. Archiving a Current doesn't archive its Memories or hide their to-dos outside that Current filter.
Archived Memories don't appear in Possible To-Dos. Unarchive a Memory to make it eligible to appear there again.
Identify Possible To‑Dos with Split
Possible To‑Dos shows Memories that may contain to‑dos whose individual Thoughts aren't yet identified. Each item links to Split Memories, except one your Split configuration is about to split, which shows Splitting automatically instead. You can collapse this section, and the page remembers your choice.
Split identifies a Memory's individual Thoughts, including its to‑dos. It does this even when it doesn't split the Memory into smaller Memories. Once identified, the to‑dos join your list.
If you turn on Find Memory splits and Thoughts automatically in Preferences, Memory Currents finds these Thoughts for you in the Memories your Split configuration covers: all of them, or only those in the Currents you choose. Others stay under Possible To‑Dos until you split them yourself.
Split works on Memories up to 20,000 characters. A longer Memory can't be split, so Split doesn't find its to‑dos, and it doesn't appear under Possible To‑Dos.
The original Memory stays intact, and saving suggested smaller Memories is optional. Possible To‑Dos isn't a list of proposed commitments to accept or decline; it's a way to find the Thoughts already within what you've saved.
When the page is still gathering to‑dos
While Memory Currents gathers your items, the page says Gathering your to‑dos.
If this changes to Still gathering your to‑dos and your items don't appear soon, turn To‑Dos off and back on in Preferences. Turning it back on sends a new request. It doesn't duplicate existing items or restart ones you've already dealt with.
Turn To‑Dos off without losing the list
Turning To‑Dos off in Preferences stops adding new items and hides the page from navigation. Your list and its history are kept. A saved link to the page shows that To‑Dos is off and links to Preferences.
Turn To‑Dos back on to use the page again. Memory Currents gathers any newly identified to‑dos that aren't already on your list while keeping the existing outcomes.
A focused list, not a task manager
To‑Dos tracks the actions in your Memories. It doesn't add due dates, reminders, priorities, assignment, subtasks, or recurrence rules. It also doesn't propose changes to your to‑dos or offer controls to attach supporting content or save a new Memory from an item.
Thoughts explains how a Memory can hold several individual actions.
