Connecting AI Tools Like Claude and ChatGPT

Turn on AI connections, then add Memory Currents to Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT or Codex.

Your Memories, from the AI tool you already use

If you already talk things through with an AI tool, you can let it save and find Memories for you without switching to Memory Currents. Ask it to remember something from your conversation, or to look up what you have already saved about a project, and it does that in your Memory Currents account.

This works through MCP, a standard way for AI tools to connect to other services. You add Memory Currents to your AI tool once, approve it, and then ask in plain words.

What a connected AI tool can do

Once connected, an AI tool can:

  • Save a Memory — Capture something you want remembered, using your words or its own summary.
  • Create a Current — Create a named thread for a topic, with the option to search your existing Memories for ones that belong in it.
  • Find your Memories — Search by words or by Current, including their Thoughts, across Active, Archived, or All.
  • Read a Memory in full — Retrieve the complete text of a Memory, even a very long one.
  • Find your Currents — Search Current names and descriptions across Active, Archived, or All.
  • Read your Streams — List your Streams or read one, with its Origin, Focus, Following, and recap, and whether that recap is up to date. When finding or reading Memories, it can also ask for the Open and Complete Streams each Memory belongs to, each with its recap.
  • Archive a Memory — Set a Memory aside without losing its words, Thoughts, or connections.
  • Unarchive a Memory — Return the same Memory to active use.
  • Archive a Current — Set aside a grouping without changing the archive states of its Memories.
  • Unarchive a Current — Return the same Current to active use.
  • Correct a Memory — Fix a typo, a name, or a detail in a Memory's text. Every earlier version is kept; Edit Memories explains how and its limits.
  • Edit a Current — Change a Current's description. Its name and Memories stay as they are, and every earlier description is kept; Currents explains how.

Searches include only Active items unless you ask for Archived or All. For example, you can ask an AI tool to find an archived Memory about a trip, read it, and unarchive it.

Unarchiving preserves the original item and doesn't restart processing. Original Memories and their smaller Memories have independent archive states.

Connected AI tools cannot rename your Currents or permanently delete your Memories or Currents.

Turn on AI connections

Open Channels → MCP in Memory Currents and check Allow AI connections. It is off until you turn it on, and while it is off no AI tool can reach your account, even one you connected before.

Find your server URL

The same page shows your Server URL, with a button to copy it. That URL is the address you give your AI tool. Copy it from the page rather than typing it.

Connect your AI tool

Each AI tool adds a server in its own way, and they change their menus from time to time. The steps below were right when this guide was written; each one links that tool's own guide too. The Channels → MCP page has the same steps, with your server URL already filled into the commands.

Whichever tool you use, it then opens a Memory Currents page. Sign in if asked, and allow access. Each AI tool you connect is approved on its own.

Claude (claude.ai and the Claude app)

  1. Open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Choose Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Memory Currents, paste your server URL, and choose Continue.
  4. Under Authentication, keep Sign in now.
  5. Under OAuth client, choose Register automatically — not the option Claude selects for you.
  6. Choose Add.

Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector; Pro and Max have no such limit. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector first, under Organization settings, then Connectors. See Claude's own guide.

Claude Code

  1. Add the server from your terminal, with your server URL in place of <server URL>: claude mcp add --transport http memory-currents <server URL>
  2. Start Claude Code, type /mcp, choose memory-currents, and sign in when your browser opens.

See Claude Code's own guide.

ChatGPT

  1. On chatgpt.com, open Plugins.
  2. Choose Add, then Add custom MCP server.
  3. Name it Memory Currents. Under Connection, keep Server URL and paste your server URL.
  4. Under Authentication, make sure OAuth is selected. Leave Advanced OAuth settings as they are.
  5. Check I understand and want to continue, then choose Create as a plugin.

ChatGPT adds custom servers on the web only. OpenAI lists full support, including saving, for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces; on Pro, ChatGPT may only read. In a Business workspace, only an admin or owner can add the server. See ChatGPT's own guide.

Codex

  1. Add the server from your terminal, with your server URL in place of <server URL>: codex mcp add memory-currents --url <server URL>
  2. Sign in, which opens your browser: codex mcp login memory-currents

See Codex's own guide.

Disconnect

To disconnect every AI tool at once, uncheck Allow AI connections on Channels → MCP and confirm. Every connected tool loses access from its next request. If you turn AI connections back on later, you need to approve each AI tool again.

You can also remove Memory Currents from an AI tool's own connector settings. Memory Currents does not list your connected tools or remove them one at a time.

Memories and Currents explain what your AI tool is saving and finding.
