Export

Download a readable YAML copy for re-import or with the extra details you choose.

Take a copy with you

Open Tools → Export to download Memories and Currents as a readable .yaml file. Export makes a copy; it does not remove or reorganize anything in your library.

Choose an export mode

For Re-Import includes Memories, Currents, and their links using only the fields Import accepts. Choose this to bring the selected collection into Memory Currents again. It preserves text, dates, and active or archived status. Types, tags, titles, and Thoughts are not restored; imported Memories receive normal automatic processing.

Custom lets you choose Memories, Currents, or both, and which extra details Memories carry:

  • title — Memory titles, plus Thought titles when Thoughts are included.
  • types — the Memory's type followed by the kinds of thoughts it holds, including repeats.
  • thoughts (with To-Do status) — each Memory's Thoughts, with their text and kind, and the status of each To-Do on the Thought, oldest first: open, complete, canceled, or archived. A Thought held by several exported Memories appears under each one.
  • Current links — references to the exported Currents each Memory belongs to.

Custom is useful for reading or using those details outside Memory Currents. You can also import its file, but Import ignores its titles, types, and Thoughts. It does not restore those Thoughts or their To-Do statuses. Neither export mode includes tags.

Choose which Currents and Memories to include

The Currents section applies to both export modes:

  • All Currents includes all active Currents and active Memories, including Memories in no Current. Include archived Currents and Memories adds archived records too.
  • Selected Currents includes the active Currents you choose and their Memories. The picker lists active Currents only. Include archived Memories adds archived Memories belonging to those Currents; it does not add archived Currents. Choose at least one Current to enable Export.

In Custom mode, the Memories and Currents checkboxes decide which kinds of record to write within that scope. Choose at least one kind.

Only current, active links to Currents included in the export are written. Removed links are not included. To carry connections into another collection, include both Memories and Currents and keep Current links on. A link alone does not recreate a missing Current.

Each Memory is treated independently: an active smaller Memory can be included even if its original was archived after splitting.

Review the count and download

As you change your selection, the page shows counts for the records included and an approximate file size. Thoughts and To-Dos are counted when included. If the count cannot be loaded, you can still export.

For Re-Import warns when the selection appears to exceed Import's 500 Memories and Currents combined or 200 KB limit. It also checks the actual file size before downloading. The warning does not prevent export, but the file will need to be divided into smaller valid import documents before it can be imported. Custom does not show this re-import warning.

You can change the suggested Filename before choosing Export. Your browser downloads a .yaml file. There is no export history in the app; keep the file where you can find it.

If your selection contains nothing to export, the page says so and no file is downloaded. If an export fails, read the message on the page. An error does not mean you received a complete copy. Try again, or reduce the selection if the message says the export is too large. A large export can exceed the separate export limit even when you do not intend to re-import it.

What the file preserves

The file contains current text and current statuses, not history. An edited Memory exports its latest text, not earlier versions. Export does not include Streams, proposals, source captures, preferences, or a history of changes. It is not a complete account backup.

See Import for the YAML fields and what happens when you bring a file back into Memory Currents.
