How Currents work
See the bigger story behind individual Memories.
Follow a thread through your Memories
A Current brings related Memories together. It might follow a trip, a project, a person, something you're learning, or an interest that keeps appearing in your life.
An Italy Trip Current could begin with a restaurant recommendation and grow to include plans, decisions, and memories of the trip itself. The same Memory can belong to more than one Current: a conversation with your daughter about the trip might also belong to a Current about her.
Currents give you ways to see your Memories together. The individual Memories remain in your library, with their original words and other connections.
Create a Current when you know the thread
On the Currents page, choose Create a Current. Give it a name and, if you like, a description of what belongs there. The description helps Memory Currents recognize related Memories. A Current can start empty.
While you stay on the page, closing and reopening the form keeps your draft. Leaving the page discards it. After saving, Open Current takes you to the new Current. Your filter clears so it can appear in the list; your chosen sort stays in place.
If the optional search for older memories fails, the Current is still created. You don't need to create it again.
Browse your Currents
On the Currents page, open Filter and sort, then use Show to choose Active, Archived, or All. Each new browsing session starts with Active. Filter Currents searches names and descriptions within the selected set. Clear removes the text filter. Sort by lets you choose recently updated, recently added, or slug A–Z.
Pagination and result counts include all matching Currents, not just those on the current page. Changing Show returns you to the first page. Collapsing the controls keeps your choices active and displays a summary.
Each card shows when the Current was last Updated, then how many Memories it holds; choose the count to open the Current. A card's actions are under Tools, the wrench button at its top right, which opens them when you choose it. On a Current's own page, the same actions sit in a row at the top.
Your sort order and expanded sections are saved for your account, even after you sign out. Text, source, and Show filters last only for the current browsing session.
Edit a Current's description
As a Current grows, you may want its description to say more clearly what belongs there. Choose Tools on the Current's card, then Edit Current, or choose Edit Current at the top of the Current's page. When a long description is cut short, you can also choose Expand description, then Edit. Change the text and choose Save. The new description appears straight away, with the note “Saved. Earlier versions are kept in Revision History.” To stop without saving, choose Cancel. If you started from Tools or the top of the Current's page, that takes you back there; if you started from Edit while reading the description, it returns to the description.
Only the description changes; the Current keeps its name and its Memories. You can give a description to a Current created without one, but you can't clear a description: Save becomes available once the text isn't empty and differs from what's saved. Only active Currents can be edited.
If the Current changed after you started editing — for example, an AI tool edited it in the meantime — your edit isn't saved. Memory Currents shows the Latest version and keeps your text in the editor, so you can check it against the latest version and save again.
Once a Current's description has been edited, Revision History comes first among its tools, and appears beside Edit in the reader. It shows every version, newest first, each with its date and description. The first version, marked Original, is the description as it was before the first edit; if the Current had no description then, it says so. Each later version shows how it was made: Edited in the app, or Edited through an AI connection. Back to Current returns to the description, or takes you back to Tools or the top of the Current's page if you opened Revision History from there. An archived Current keeps its Revision History, but it can't be edited until you unarchive it.
Export includes each Current's current description. Earlier versions aren't included. If you've connected an AI tool, you can also ask it to change a Current's description.
Add or remove a Memory
Memory Currents brings many Memories into your Currents for you, and you can also choose for yourself. To add a Memory to a Current, go to the Memories page, choose Tools on the Memory's card, then Add to Current. Pick the Current from the list and choose Add to Current. The list shows your active Currents that the Memory isn't in yet, A to Z. If the Memory is already in all of them, Add to Current is greyed out; hover over it or focus it to see “No Currents to add to.”
To take a Memory out of a Current, open the Current, choose Tools on the Memory's card, then Remove from Current, and confirm. The Memory leaves that Current but isn't deleted, and it stays in any other Current it belongs to. You can remove a Memory however it joined the Current, whether you added it, Memory Currents connected it, or it came with an import.
Memory Currents remembers that you took it out. When it connects Memories on its own — as new ones arrive, through Find older memories, or during an import — it won't add that Memory to that Current again. If you change your mind, add it back from its card on the Memories page. Adding or removing a Memory changes the Current's Updated date. You can't add or remove an archived Memory, or change what's in an archived Current, until you unarchive it.
Find older memories
You may have saved useful Memories before you knew you wanted a Current for them. Find older memories uses the Current's name and description to find related Memories you've already saved. It adds connections without removing existing ones, and it never adds back a Memory you've removed from that Current.
Where this feature is available, leave Find older memories for this Current checked when creating the Current, or uncheck it and choose Find older memories beside the Current later.
The search shows how many Memories it has checked and added. Choose Keep looking if it pauses or Try again if it fails. Hover, focus, or tap Search complete to see the finished result. A search can finish without finding anything to add. Each Current can complete this search once; after completion, it can't be run again for that Current.
Let other connections emerge
Where matching is available, Memory Currents can connect new Memories to your existing Currents based on their meaning. The words don't have to match the Current's name. It may miss a connection or make one you wouldn't have chosen; its interpretation can be imperfect.
Self-Organize can look across saved Memories for themes you haven't named. You decide each new Current it suggests, and it doesn't change the Currents you already have. Read Self-Organize for how it works and its limits.
Archive a Current and return to it
Choose Tools on a Current's card, then Archive, and confirm. On the Current's own page, Archive is one of the buttons at the top. The Current disappears from Active views, but its name, description, and connections remain intact. Its Memories keep their own archive states and history. Self-Organize still won't suggest what the archived Current holds, unless you check Suggest Currents like the ones I've archived for a run. On the Currents page, a short notice above the list confirms the change for a few seconds.
Choose Archived or All to find and open the Current. Its card shows Archived across the top, and its tools offer Unarchive but not Edit Current; an edited Current keeps Revision History. You can still read its active Memories, and its Memory count reflects only those active Memories. Archived member Memories remain accessible through the Memories page. Find older memories is unavailable for an archived Current, but its active Memories retain their usual controls.
Choose Unarchive, in the same place, and confirm to return the same Current to active use. If you're viewing its page, you stay there. Find older memories becomes available subject to its usual limits; it doesn't start automatically. Suggestions you've declined in Self-Organize stay declined.
If an older-memory search is already running, you may need to wait for it to finish before changing the Current.
Memories explains the things a Current connects. Import and Export explain how to carry Current definitions and Memory connections in a readable file.
